SARASOTA COUNTY — A local group of volunteers is working on a program that would allow for the successful re-entry into the community for the homeless, as well as those who have been incarcerated in the Sarasota County Jail or are being released from a mental institution.
The mission of the Sarasota Transition and Re-Entry Consortium, or S.T.A.R., is to integrate at-risk people in Sarasota County into the community by providing wrap-around re-entry services as the foundation for establishing fully productive and successful lives. S.T.A.R Chairwoman Jasmine Candlish said this week that a re-entry program is defined by the services and programs — or lack thereof — that mark the return of a former inmate from jail or a veteran returning from combat into society.
