SARASOTA COUNTY — Sarasota County officials are ready to work on a partnership with Sarasota Memorial Hospital that could lead to an “official” park-and-ride site on Sumter Boulevard for commuters who carpool to work from North Port to Sarasota or other locations during the week.

Nearly two years ago, the county and city of North Port commissions sent letters to the SMH inquiring about use of a small parcel of land on Sumter just south of Interstate 75 that is owned by the hospital. The land is meant to serve as an entryway to the property, and county officials say there are already over a dozen cars parked on the spot on a daily basis, without the hospital’s permission. Drivers carpool to jump on I-75 to Sarasota.
