SARASOTA COUNTY — The United Nations Environment Programme’s Regional Office for North America has selected Sarasota County as the official North American host community for World Environment Day, to take place on June 5.
World Environment Day was established in 1972 and is celebrated every year in more than 100 countries. It is one of the UN’s primary means of stimulating environmental awareness on a global basis. Although the official day of celebration is June 5, the awareness campaign begins on Earth Day, April 22 — providing North America with a six-week period in which activities can take place.
