NORTH PORT — A 13-year-old girl who was apparently helping her grandmother back up a van Wednesday evening ran over the woman, who later died from her injuries, according to the North Port Police Department.

NPPD units were dispatched to the 4400 block of McKibben Drive in North Port shortly after 6 p.m. in reference to a female struck by a vehicle, a police report shows. When officers arrived, they found Judith Anne Jellema, 68, lying unconscious in the driveway of her residence. North Port Fire Rescue arrived on scene and transported Jellema to Bayflite near City Hall. The emergency medical helicopter flew her to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, where she died, the report shows. Investigators say Jellema had parked her gray 2008 Nissan Quest van in the driveway of the home in a “crooked manner.” She told her granddaughter to back up the vehicle and straighten it out while she stood at the open driver’s-side door. As the teen put the van in reverse, it rolled back, causing the door to hit Jellema and knock her to the ground. The granddaughter then attempted to stop the van and hit the accelerator, causing the vehicle’s left front tire to roll over the woman, the report shows. Charges are pending, according to the report.
