Judge’s public records ruling still on hold

NORTH PORT — A 12th Judicial Circuit judge reserved ruling on Thursday in a public records tug-of-war between the city of North Port and Sarasota-based paralegal Michael Barfield, who thinks the city is still abusing state statutes by not releasing the names of police officers currently on administrative leave.

The city filed a civil action against Barfield in March when the paralegal pressed for the names of Melanie Turner and Ricky Urbina, two North Port police officers who, at the time, were at the center of a criminal investigation tied to the alleged sexual battery of a 38-year-old woman.
