SARASOTA COUNTY — For organizations like hers, Valerie Goddard said The Giving Challenge provides a breath of fresh air.
“It’s an opportunity to engage residents, businesses and community donors in a different way,” said Goddard, executive director of The Women’s Resource Center of Sarasota County. She added the fundraiser comes at a time when revenues from donations normally begin to slow for charitable organizations in the area. The Giving Challenge, a 24-hour online fundraiser that starts Tuesday at noon, has many game-like elements that aim to make it a fun experience for participants and donors. Every hour, one randomly chosen donor will get $250 added to his donation. In addition to the hourly prizes, one donor who contributes between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m. will win $5,000 added to his donation. Six foundations have pooled $675,000 to be awarded to organizations in fund-matching and prize grants. The partners are Community Foundation of Sarasota County, The Patterson Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Manatee Community Foundation, William G. and Marie Selby Foundation and the Charlotte Community Foundation. The total amount of donations will be updated every 60 seconds on the challenge’s website, www.givingpartnerchallenge.org, as well as a list of the organizations that have donations from the most individuals.
