NORTH PORT — On Friday, Heron Creek Middle School students will take part in a fundraising walk to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, the first time they’ve held such an event. Hopefully it won’t be the last, according to staff at the school.

“We need some traditions here at the Creek, because we really don’t have a whole lot, and we really wanted to find something we would do every single year that, one, would benefit the community and, two, bring everybody together — staff, students, teachers, the community, everybody,” said HCMS math teacher Jennifer Weinberger, one of 10 staff members helping to organize the event. Weinberger said language arts teacher Jason Linneweber, a retired Army sergeant who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, was also on the committee. There are six other veterans on staff at HCMS.
