NORTH PORT — The North Port Police Department has determined the March 1 fatal shooting of former Venice resident Christopher Hays to be a justifiable homicide, officials reported Tuesday.
Hays, 27, was fatally shot by Joseph Catalioti of Venice, also 27, at a home in the 600 block of Deming Ave. in North Port, in what was originally thought to be a break-in. “The decedent forcibly entered the residence with the intent to commit an alleged battery on persons within, thereby committing an occupied burglary. Based on concurrent findings with the State Attorney’s Office, this case is closed as a justifiable homicide as a result of the decedent’s actions,” NPPD Assistant Police Chief Tony Sirianni wrote in a report.
