When law enforcement turns to technology and social media to seek aid in solving cases, authorities run the risk of committing inadvertent errors or receiving unhelpful feedback. That’s what happened Friday afternoon when the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office was looking for a missing girl, but officials say the situation has been addressed.
After a 10-year-old girl ran away from a youth program at Lighthouse Baptist Church, located in Charlotte County behind the North Port Home Depot, the CCSO was quick to get the word out to the public via social media. A CCSO Facebook post to 9,368 users was shared 380 times and received 65 comments. The same information reached 985 Twitter followers. And, an alert was texted or emailed to 1,142 people registered for the Nixle notification service.
