Leona A. Berard, 98, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at the Tidewell Hospice House of Sarasota, Fla., with her daughter Denise at her side.

Born in Central Falls, R.I., she was the daughter of Dolor and Leonile (nee Baris) Dery.

Leona was a resident of Central Falls for many years, with a summer residence in East Matunuck, R.I., and a home in Florida. She was a communicant of St. Matthew Church (Holy Spirit Parish), and an active member of the St. Matthew Women’s Club and Les Dames de Ste. Anne. Leona was a homemaker in the true sense of the word, devoting her attention to her family, home and friends. She was an avid book reader, loved to grow a garden or go “quahogging,” and enjoyed crocheting and sewing, along with cooking and entertaining. She was always ready for a card game, and delighted her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with her storytelling.

Leona was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and the devoted wife of 55 years to Eugene H. Berard.

She is survived by her son, Charles (Jan) Berard of Pahrump, Nev.; and daughters, Celeste (Roger) Tellier of Coventry, R.I., and Denise (Mark) Pion of North Port, Fla., with whom she made her home for the past seven years. She also leaves behind many dear nieces, nephews and friends; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Morano of Sarasota, Fla., Matthew Berard of Coventry, Rebecca Truppi of Wakefield, R.I., Sarah (Jeffrey) Schrier of Arcadia, Calif., Mark (Jessica) Tellier of West Greenwich, R.I., Jessica (Mickey) Davis of Port Charlotte, Fla., Audra (Matthew) Lavoie of Exeter, R.I., Michael Berard of Port Charlotte, Adrienne and Jacqueline Pion of North Port, and Torpedoman’s Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class Jacques Pion of Bremerton Naval Base, Washington; 12 great-grandchildren, Marcus and Adara Tellier, Lily and Adam Truppi, Ruby Jorge, Seth and Noah Morano, Jacob and Cailin Schrier, Lacy and Reese Davis, and Aiden Lavoie; and daughter-in-law, Donna Berard. Leona was preceded in death by her siblings, Aram, Roger and Bertrand Dery, and Lucille Lafond; son, Donald Berard; and daughter-in-law, Anne Berard.

Her funeral will be held at 8:15 a.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, from Lincoln Funeral Home in Lincoln, R.I. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish in Central Falls. Burial will be at Notre Dame Cemetery in Pawtucket, R.I. Calling was Friday.
