Emelia Florence “Millie” Sorensen, 102, of North Port, Fla., passed away Friday, Feb. 21, 2014.

She was born Dec. 26, 1911, in Chicago, Ill.

Millie worked for a brief period as secretary in a bank, and for 10 years was executive secretary to the president of Consolidated Foods Corp. She didn’t drive until she was 50 years old. After her husband died, she was appointed President of Gate Way Graphics in Chicago. Millie has lived in North Port for close to 36 years. Keeping active has contributed to her longevity. Millie did most of her gardening, up until the age of 96. She would play cards five times a week and bingo four times a week, and later became a self-taught artist.

Millie is survived by her daughter, Carol A. Johnson of North Port; son, Peter (Bonnie) Pedersen of North Port; granddaughter, Kimberly A. Blanchette; grandsons, Jeff, Scott, Phillip, Michael and Patrick Pedersen; great-grandchildren, Josh and Katie; and an abundance of good friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Sorensen; and two sons, Donald and Phillip.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 5550 S. Sumter Blvd., North Port, FL 34287. Refreshments will follow.
