Eliot C. “Smokey” Holden, 84, of Westport, Mass., passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in New Bedford, Mass., son of Ira A. and Rebecca B. (nee Johnson) Holden.

Smokey had resided in both Westport and North Port, Fla. He also spent a great amount of time in North Conway, N.H. Smokey enlisted and served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Prior to his retirement in 1991, he was the Assistant Vice President of the Fall River Gas Co.

He was the widower of Geraldine A. (nee Lajmuc) Holden. Smokey was a former member of the Town of Westport Board of Appeals and a former member of the Head of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion Post 0095 of North Conway, and a member of the North Port Moose Lodge 764. Smokey loved spending time with his family and pets, Maya and Meeko.

Survivors include his three sons, Paul E. (Patricia) Holden, Peter E. (Enedina “Dina”) Holden and Mark T. Holden; daughter, Ann L. (Thomas) O’Meara; grandchildren, Matthew (Amanda J.), Amanda K., Jared, Shaina, Spenser, Alexander and Kathleen Holden, Ryan (fiancé, Elizabeth Barrett), and Scott and Allison O’Meara; and several nieces and nephews; he will be missed by his friend, Pauline Dallaire; and by all that knew him, including his friends in Florida. He was preceded in death by siblings, Earle B. Holden, Rae Knowlton and Shirley Gifford; his parents; and his wife, Geraldine.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial to which relatives and friends are invited will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at St. Bernard’s Church, 30 S. Main St., Assonet, MA 02702. Calling hours respectfully omitted. Interment will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Nurse & Hospice Care, 62 Center St., Fairhaven, MA 02719 or to the MSPCA-Angell Headquarters, 350 South Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130.
