Marla D. (nee Matteson) Haynes, 58, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014.

She was born July 18, 1955, in Washington, Ind., to Jack Matteson and Kay Hill Matteson.

Marla grew up in Washington, and graduated from Washington High School class of 1973. In more recent years she called Elizabethtown, Ill., home, and, upon retiring in 2010, she moved to North Port, Fla. She was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Charlotte County in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Diagnosed with cancer in October 2012, she fought very hard and never gave up. Marla inspired many with her courage and grace. She loved nature and the outdoors, gardening, cooking, boating, the beach, and spending time with family and friends. Her compassion toward others was unparalleled. To say we will miss her greatly is an understatement, but the tears are for us, not for her; she is at peace now, as her spirit has soared. She would want to be commemorated by simple acts of kindness.

Marla is survived by her beloved, cherished husband of 32 years, George Haynes of North Port; her daughter, Jennifer Seat Rastegar of Carmel, Ind.; her son, Mathew Haynes of Equality, Ill.; two precious grandchildren, Asher and Stella Rastegar of Carmel; father, Jack Matteson of Washington; mother, Kay Matteson of Haines City, Fla.; brother, Chris (Lynnette) Matteson of Washington; sisters, Lisa Matteson of Haines City, and Yvonne Matteson of Washington; and many adored nieces, nephews, cousins and family.

At Marla’s request, a celebration of life will be held at a later date in Washington.
