A homeless man was arrested Sunday after allegedly attempting to strangle his ex-girlfriend. The victim told members of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office she lives in the garage of a residence on Salem Avenue. She was there with her 5-year-old daughter and a male friend on Oct. 14 when her ex-boyfriend, Benjamin George Durham, 42, came to the door. He could not get in because of a dead-bolt, and she told him to leave.

Instead, Durham crawled in through a window that didn’t have glass in it. The victim said he approached her, said “some nasty” things to her, struck her in the face with a closed fist and hit her lip with his ball cap. He allegedly swung at her friend before coming back to her and wrapping both hands around her throat, choking her until she couldn’t breathe. According to her statement, he picked her up by the neck and threw her across the couch.
