Chris Walling stands back and watches his team member, Albert Bentley, hit the golf ball early Saturday morning at Bobcat Trail Golf Club in North Port. NFL player Bentley, a former running back for eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, was among the celebrities playing in a golf tournament fundraiser to a benefit New Operation Cooper Street — a community-based organization that is both a learning and a recreation center — in Punta Gorda. Joining him were Anthony Hargrove, an NFL player who went to the Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints; and Port Charlotte High School alumnus and former NBA player with the Atlanta Hawks, Darrell Gadsden. NORTH PORT — Two former NFL players and a former MLB player joined a former NBA player to take part in a celebrity golf fundraiser tournament at Bobcat Trail on Saturday.

The tournament, which was the “brain child” of Darrell Gadsden, a former Atlanta Hawks player, featured nine teams of four golfers each. Gadsden is a member of the Cooper Street Community Learning Center board of directors and the tournament raised money for the center, which has lost a lot of government funding in the last two years. Gadsden’s wife, Arlene, grew up going to Cooper Street, and their company, Gadsden Property Investment Inc., was one of the tournament’s primary sponsors.
