Captain Billy Barton of Scales-N’-Tails Charters was fishing for redfish on the flats in the days leading up to Hurricane Charley, which took a right turn into Charlotte Harbor sometime after 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2004.

Useppa (Island) had a massive school of overslot breeder reds on it that chummed up like jacks on whitebait, Barton recalled, saying it was an absolutely amazing week of fishing that he’ll never forget.
