In an image released to the media, a sinkhole is seen at the bottom of a pond on Mosaic property near Mulberry. It is 45 feet across and water drained from it into the aquifer was contaminated, although officials say there is no danger to the public.

It will take Mosaic Fertilizer longer than anticipated to repair this sinkhole, which opened up at its Polk County mine.

Efforts to seal a sinkhole at the Mosaic Fertilizer plant in Polk County are taking longer than originally anticipated and may not be completed until next spring rather than this summer, according to the company.

In correspondence last month between Mosaic and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the company said it could not meet the consent order deadline for repairing the sinkhole.
