PUNTA GORDA — The city of Punta Gorda has reached a severance agreement for over $100,000 with a former female police officer, settling a gender discrimination claim and avoiding a potential lawsuit.

A discrimination charge was filed by former officer Bonnie Sills Buckelew with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The agreement — signed by Philip Wickstrom, the city’s Human Resource Manager on Jan. 31, and City Manager Howard Kunik a day later — settles the claim for $102,500.
