PUNTA GORDA — At the beginning of the year, Ayana Hodges was one of the fastest girls on Charlotte High School’s track team. Then, in a instant, she became the slowest.
The 17-year-old was walking to her bus stop — near Seasons Drive and Encarnacion Street in Deep Creek — shortly after 6 a.m. Oct. 17. She was struck from behind by a mid-size car, which disappeared without even slowing. A Florida Highway Patrol report shows Ayana was lifted and thrown to the shoulder of the road. Witnesses heard a thump and a scream and saw the young girl coming to the ground.
