The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has placed three deputies on administrative leave while the agency is investigating an incident in which one of the deputies fired several shots inside a Port Charlotte home Sunday.
Around 11 a.m., authorities responded to the 500 block of Lowell Avenue for a report of a man threatening to harm himself. The deputies announced their presence and entered the house. CCSO investigations commander Captain Les Partington said the suspect pointed a gun at the deputies, before one of them fired in his direction. No one was hit. Major Crimes detectives are investigating the incident since there was gunfire involved, which Partington said is standard procedure. The names of the deputies or the man have not yet been released. Partington said the suspect is a 63-year-old male who was due in court in Sarasota on Monday, which a relative told authorities may have been a reason for him wanting to kill himself. The suspect was at an unspecified area facility Monday, but will be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer when he’s released, Partington said.
