Cops slam pill bill

Less than a week after a Port Charlotte woman was arrested for allegedly obtaining over 1,600 prescription pills in a 10-month doctor-shopping scam, lawmakers introduced a bill to the Florida Senate that would — if enacted — limit authorities’ ability to apprehend such suspects.

Senate Bill 862 (SB 862) was introduced by the Committee on Health Policy on March 4 — the first day of the state’s 2014 legislative session. If passed, it would amend a section of Florida’s Statutes pertaining to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program — a Florida Department of Health database containing patients’ prescription medication history.
