PUNTA GORDA — Southwest Florida Water Management District officials are waiting to decide what kind of sanctions — if any — a city contractor will get for chopping down a swath of protected mangroves along Harborwalk East near the downtown area.

According to City Engineer Mark Gering, city staff met with the water district — the permitting agency, better known as Swiftmud — last month to discuss the ramifications and possible penalties facing Quality Enterprise USA, a Naples-based contractor hired to do drainage improvements in sections of the city near Bayfront Health Punta Gorda (formerly Charlotte Regional Medical Center) and Gilchrist Park.
