NORTH PORT — Not too long ago, Heron Creek Middle sixth-grader Clarissa Gregory was sitting in the school cafeteria with a friend when the classmate said something about how hungry she was.

“I asked her why she was hungry and she said, ‘Because I didn’t get any dinner last night,’” recalled 12-year-old Clarissa.
