If someone had asked retired state attorney Erica Raffel a year ago if gay couples in Florida ever would enjoy the same right to marriage as straight couples in the state, her answer would have been a resounding no — not in her lifetime.
But Thursday, after a Florida appeals court rejected a motion by state Attorney General Pam Bondi that urged the state’s top court to delay a ruling on its same-sex marriage ban until the U.S. Supreme Court eventually decides on the issue, Raffel was more hopeful than ever. As she sees it, the ruling moves Florida closer to marriage equality.
