While Tuesday’s Punta Gorda City Council election delivered a fourth woman to the council, the city still falls one female short of Bauxite, Ark., which has five female council members. The town of 432 people also has women serving as treasurer and attorney, but has a male mayor in its council/mayor form of government.
Nancy Prafke, the former CEO of the advocacy group Team Punta Gorda, defeated Charles Counsil 63-37 percent to win the District 5 seat, joining Carolyn Freeland, Kim Devine and Rachel Keesling, who the council elected as the city’s second female mayor during Wednesday’s council meeting. Freeland, who won re-election unopposed this year, was elected vice mayor by her colleagues, marking the first time in the city’s history two women have held the two ceremonial posts. Councilman Tom Cavanaugh holds the District 4 seat.
