I n May 2008, a concerned nurse alerted my doctor after checking my vital signs at a regular appointment. Once my oxygen-saturation level of 80 percent on 2 liters of oxygen was verified, Dr. Aloca quickly pushed me across the street in a wheelchair to DeSoto Memorial Hospital. The lung scan he ordered “stat” confirmed his suspicion: a pulmonary embolism — blood clots in my lungs. When, after a week in ICU, my doctor said I was blessed by God to have survived, I decided I needed to practice “thanksliving!”

Today, I thank God that: a daily dose of Coumadin prevents blood clots; a lab monitors my blood’s INR reading monthly; and as I pray for safe INR limits, there’s a powerful phrase in Leviticus 17:11: “The life … is in the blood.”
