An 11-year-old Monte Matarese often spent his day espousing the qualities of Punta Gorda Isles to prospective home buyers on a pontoon boat tour of canals. He wasn’t paid for his work, but he earned the appreciation of his father, who was the first salesman for PGI in 1958.
“I was being groomed to be a real estate salesman,” Matarese said. “We took the visitors up and down the canals, and I gave my spiel. PGI had some of the best public relations people in the business. They had signs starting at the Florida/Georgia line saying ‘X’ number of miles to PGI.”
