NORTH PORT — Officials are investigating how a Charlotte County Sheriff’s K-9 officer managed to escape and ultimately die over the weekend.

The dog, Edo, was discovered dead in a wooded area Monday morning near Cranberry Boulevard and Velvet Lane in North Port. A neighbor was walking her own dog when she saw Edo roughly 5 feet away from the sidewalk and soon involved the North Port Police. He did not appear to have any external injuries when he was found dead, according to authorities.
