CHARLOTTE COUNTY — Sheriff Bill Prummell wants to warn area residents to take necessary precautions when using an ATM card to avoid being a victim of a card skimmer. Within the last month or so, the Sheriff’s Office has received more than a dozen separate, seemingly unrelated, reports of credit or debit cards being fraudulently used while the victim still had possession of the card. “While our detectives are continuing to investigate these cases, I want to encourage everyone to take a few moments to check out the ATM or credit mechanism before swiping your card and inputting a PIN,” Prummell said. “Check for anything that looks out of place like a loose fitting card-swiper or something that looks like a camera directed toward the keyboard.”

According to detectives, even though the skimmer mechanism can capture the information from the card’s magnetic strip, but the PIN number is not part of the encoded information. So the only way a suspect can get the PIN number for a debit card is to see what number was put in by the victim. So, be sure to check the surroundings before you swipe your credit or debit card. If you find something suspicious, notify someone at the business and call the Sheriff’s Office at 941-639-2101 to report it.
