MURDOCK — Seven-year-old Dante Bloomfield of Port Charlotte slips a socked foot into a foot measure at the Payless ShoeSource at the Port Charlotte Town Center mall and quietly waits for a sticker. The Neil Armstrong Elementary School student can barely contain his excitement at the thought of a new pair of sneakers.

“You’re a size 1 1⁄2,” says the sales associate with a smile, as she writes the number down on a sticker and hands it to him.
