PUNTA GORDA — On a warm and cloudy Thursday afternoon, Marilyn Smithson of Texas strolls through Laishley Marina admiring the scenery. It’s the retiree’s first time in the city and, judging by the look on her face, she’s impressed.

Smithson’s daughter, a resident of Fort Myers, has been elbowing her mom to move closer to her. Punta Gorda, Smithson says, seems like a place she’d definitely consider.
