PUNTA GORDA — A city contractor hired to do drainage improvements along the Harborwalk, east of the downtown, mistakenly chopped hundreds of feet of mature mangroves in an area officials say was clearly off limits.

At a City Council meeting Wednesday, City Engineer Mark Gering told council members some 1,680 square feet of wetlands had been virtually wiped of trees over the weekend after workers from Quality Enterprise USA, the Naples-based contractor awarded the $1.47 million job, went beyond the area marked for clearing.
