A difficult approach

PUNTA GORDA — While having lunch at the Sky View Café on Jan. 29, Jim Kaletta and Heath Strachan, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, could not help but hear the drone of the Allegiant Aircraft engines as they attempted to land at the airport.

Because of the low ceiling, 500 feet and a 6-mile visibility at noontime that day, the MD-80 and 737 planes could not land and numerous flights were canceled. As the stranded passengers sat in the restaurant, both pilots, with years of aviation experience, overheard passengers ask why the private jets and other smaller planes were landing with ease and Allegiant could not?
