Jim Reif — NBC2 director of meteorology — passed away late Monday at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, NBC2 announced early today. Reif had suffered traumatic head injuries after a bicycle accident Sunday in Estero. The bike hit a sign, Reif was thrown off and hit his head on the curb.
The longtime weatherman succumbed to his injuries at 10:38 p.m. Reif, who is from Cherry Hill, N.J., began his local TV career in 1979. He worked for WINK News for 20 years before joining Waterman Broadcasting in 1999 as chief meteorologist for ABC7. He was most recently director of meteorology for NBC2. Reif is well known for his coverage of Hurricane Charley. Charlotte County Emergency Management director Wayne Sallade has credited Reif with saving lives by providing helpful information during the time of tragedy.
