International art lands in Punta Gorda

Turkish artist Kamal Tufan assembles his "Keel" sculpture Friday at the Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens in Punta Gorda. The sculpture, composed of 23 seperate pieces of lava rock brought from Indonesia, will resemble a ship's hull that has washed up on shore.

PUNTA GORDA — Kamal Tufan’s professional journey didn’t start off in a linear fashion. After graduating from a university with a degree in science, the Turkish native got a job as an industrial engineer. But after only five months, Tufan quit. His heart just wasn’t in it.

So he did what any pragmatic engineer would do. He became a sculptor. If his passion failed to earn him a living, he figured, engineering would be a good fallback.
