PORT CHARLOTTE — A Port Charlotte man reported on Monday that he had been robbed and shot, but the investigation into those claims turned out to be false and he was himself arrested for filing a false police report. At about 10:30 a.m., Peter James Bonfiglio, 27, of the 20200 block of Kinderkemac Avenue in Port Charlotte, called the Sheriff’s Office to report that a woman he knew and a man he didn’t know had taken jewelry from him at gun point at about 2 a.m. Bonfiglio claimed the man shot him in the foot. Due to his injuries, Bonfiglio was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

During the investigation, detectives spoke to the woman Bonfiglio said was involved. She said that Bonfiglio had approached her about getting some money from her in exchange for some jewelry. She showed the detectives several text messages that supported what she was saying. She said she had gone to see Bonfiglio by herself and that his foot was injured when she arrived. The detectives also spoke with a taxi driver who drove the woman to Bonfiglio’s house. The driver confirmed there had been no other man present with the woman at the residence. As a result of their investigation, detectives determined that Bonfiglio had actually shot himself, most likely accidentally, and that his claim of having been robbed was false. After Bonfiglio was released from the hospital, detectives arrested him on charges of filing a false police report and violation of probation. He was being held at the Charlotte County Jail without bond. During their investigation, detectives found that Bonfiglio had been arrested in October 2013 on similar charges. During that incident he allegedly also shot himself and then reported that someone concealed in a wooded area had shot him.
