The crane that toppled onto some power lines Thursday afternoon in Port Charlotte was undamaged. Crews righted the crane, and the damaged power lines were repaired around midnight. The construction workers took a planned day off Friday.

PORT CHARLOTTE — County officials have determined that the incident in which a crane fell onto some power lines alongside U.S. 41 Thursday afternoon was just an accident, and the micro-tunneling project for which it was being used will continue as scheduled.

“When they lifted the boom up in the air to turn the crane around to keep it away from traffic on U.S. 41, the counterweight on the back of the crane tilted and the crane just tipped over,” Charlotte County project manager Jeff Keyser said. “It was one of those freak things.”
