CHARLOTTE COUNTY — For Rick Fried, being among the first winners of the local tourism bureau’s photography contest was gratifying, but not as rewarding as being out on upper Shell Creek for his serene waterscape of kayakers among the palms.

“My interest in photography is secondary to my interest in the outdoors,” Fried said from his home in the Shell Creek area east of Punta Gorda, abutting the 370-acre preserve. “This is Old Florida, the way the explorers saw it.”
