Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Sonja M. McDaniel, 75, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013.
She was born Dec. 20, 1937, in Indianapolis, Ind.
Sonja received her nursing degree at St Vincent’s School of Nursing in Indianapolis. After working as a nurse in Indianapolis, she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1963, retiring as a Major in 1986. During this period she was stationed in Europe, the Far East and many stateside assignments. Sonja served as a Flight Nurse during the Vietnam War. After retirement, she moved to Punta Gorda. She was a volunteer at Lee Memorial Health Systems, Cape Coral Hospital, and enjoyed being an active member of the Red Hats. Sonja was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in North Fort Myers, Fla.
She is survived by her brothers, Robert (Shirley) McDaniel of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Thomas (Sharon) McDaniel of Plainfield, Ind.; and nephew, Joseph (Carla) Culp of Indianapolis.
There will be a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at St. Therese Catholic Church, 20115 N. Tamiami Trail, North Fort Myers, FL 33913, followed by a niche-side service with military honors at Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery, 9400 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33950.
