Marika Georgiou, 80, of Punta Gorda, Fla., departed this life Friday, Oct. 4, 2013.

She was born June 15, 1933, in Cairo, Egypt.

Marika immigrated to the United States in 1958 where she was a devoted wife to George T. Georgiou, MD, as well as a mother, philanthropist and successful business owner. She overcame many obstacles as an immigrant and was determined to learn the English language, even earning an associate degree in business and marketing in the early 1980s.

Marika lived life to the fullest and enjoyed her many activities in the Punta Gorda area and the friends she made through the years. She was a longtime member of the Isles Yacht Club, Twin Isles Country Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Yah Yah Girls, just to mention a few. Many loved Marika and the world will not be as colorful with her passing.

She is survived by her son, Thomas (Laura); her daughter, Andrea Niki (Timothy SGT CPD) Casey; five grandchildren, Alexandrea, Amanda, and Thomas Jr. Georgiou, Timothy Jr. and Alexandra Casey; sister, Anna Paraskevas; brother, Michael Coumbaros. Marika was preceded in death by her husband, George; and her brother, George Coumbaros of Greece.

She was laid to rest Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Chapel Hill Gardens West in Oak Brook, Ill. Marika’s family is requesting donations to be made to Rush University Medical Center for pancreatic cancer research.
