Owen “Gene” Hanchey, 82, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014.

He was born July 21, 1931, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Cronley and Mable Hanchey.

Gene was a retired U.S. Army Ranger, and served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received several recognitions, including two purple hearts and an Air Medal. Gene was a retired Captain with DeSoto Correctional Institution in Arcadia, Fla. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Port Charlotte, the First Cavalry Division Association, World Wide Army Rangers, the American Legion over 50 years, the VFW, the Vietnam Brotherhood and AMVETS. Gene enjoyed going fishing, boating, gambling, traveling and taking cruises. Honey, Rangers Lead the Way.

Gene will be missed by his wife, Diane; children, Michaela, Robert and Sheri; cousin, Marie; stepchildren, Tracy and Katie; several grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his four-legged companions, Margarita and Taco. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.
