William “Bill” Joseph Coogan, 59, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at home in Punta Gorda.
He was born Aug. 26, 1954, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Emma (nee Hangarter) and Robert Francis Coogan.
Bill grew up in a loving home with seven brothers and six sisters. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Preparatory School and Fordham University. Bill was one of the founders of Pac Bridge Shipping in New York, a pioneer in the Ocean Logistics Freight service sector. The company was later acquired by Expeditors International, where he worked for over 25 years, retiring as an Executive Vice President. His career allowed him to develop close friendships with colleagues around the world, and he was well known and respected in the global ocean shipping industry.
Upon retirement from Expediters in 2004, Bill and his family relocated from Seattle, Wash., to Punta Gorda to be closer to his east coast roots and to pursue his passion for sailing. Bill was happiest when entertaining and caring for his loved ones and friends. He did this graciously and unselfishly, always putting others before himself. Bills’ extensive sailing adventures took him from the waters of the Puget Sound in Washington State to the Bahamas and up the Eastern seaboard all the way to the Coast of Maine. Bill will be remembered as a devoted loving husband and father who cherished time with his family. He was known for his quick wit, keen intelligence, and willingness to always help those around him. Bill was very proud of the gifts and accomplishments of his children. All who knew him will carry forever his lesson of strength and love, as he touched and impacted so many lives. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving and beloved wife, of 16 years, Christina Ameglio Coogan; his mother, Emma; his sons, William Joseph Coogan (Anna), Robert Francis Coogan, and James Paul Coogan; daughters, Sarah Christine Coogan and Isabella Grace Coogan; and13 brothers and sisters and their families.
