Glenda West Barton, 78, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and formerly of East Point, Ga., passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014.
She was born Aug. 5, 1935, in Atlanta, Ga.
Mrs. Barton was a graduate of Hapeville High School, and attended Georgia State University. She worked as a bookkeeper, and an office manager in the oil-distribution industry. Glenda also served as the church organist at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Atlanta for over 40 years, prior to her retirement. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda, Fla., where she served faithfully making handmade note cards for the Care Ministry. Glenda was affectionately known as the “Card Lady.”
She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Barton of Port Charlotte; daughter, Miriam Barton Crawley of Woodstock, Ga; son, David Barton of Haxton, Colo.; daughter, Charlene Barton Powell of Lithia Springs, Ga.; and son, Glenn Barton of Jasper, Ala.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Glenn West and Addie Ruth (nee Morris) West; and brothers Robert L. West and Eugene West.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014, at First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda. An additional service will be held at a later date at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Atlanta, with interment at the Mount Zion Cemetery. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the debt-retirement fund for First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda, 507 W. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950.
