Donald Burton Nichols

Donald Burton “Don” Nichols, 83, of Venice, Fla., and formerly of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Monday, March 17, 2014, surrounded by his family.

Don was born in Bronx, N.Y., to Ruth and Daniel Nichols, and grew up in Fort Edward, N.Y.

He earned a degree in Physics, and started work for the United States Air Force as an electronics engineer at Griffiss Air Force Base in 1951. Don remained employed by the Air Force Department of Defense for his entire professional career, retiring after 34 years as a Directorate of Aeromechanics and Electronics at Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Upon retiring in 1985, he relocated to Punta Gorda, where he lived until 2011, before moving to Venice. Don was a loving husband and father; he was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Beatrice (nee Godfrey) Nichols; son, Roger of Stafford, Va.; daughter, Donna of Venice; beloved grandson, Nicholas; three brothers, Robert Nichols of Taylorsville, N.C., Stanley (Arline) Nichols of Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Roger (Dorothy) Nichols of Roanoke, Va.; and many nephews and nieces.
