Michael Steven Kalman

Michael Steven Kalman, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Tidewell Hospice House.

He was born Jan. 20, 1942, in Evergreen Park, Ill., to George T. Kalman and Catherine Hennessey Kalman Klaczynski.

Michael served in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Ky., during the Vietnam War. Although his career spanned 20 years with Amtrak and 13 years as a Realtor in Chicago, Ill., his true passion was theatre. He performed often in theatre in both Chicago and Orlando, Fla., appearing as Conrad Birdie in “Bye Bye Birdie” with the Encore Theatre of Chicago. Michael appeared in “Hello, Dolly!” and “Oklahoma” with Sebastian’s Dinner Theatre in Orlando, as well as in several productions with Music on Stage in Palatine, Ill., and The North Shore Theatre of Wilmette, Ill., where he also served briefly on the Board of Directors. He appeared in commercials for Burger Beer in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in NASA training films. Michael performed in operas with the North Shore Opera Company of Chicago at the Jack Benny Performing Arts Center in Waukegan, Ill. He appeared as The Grangerford Minister in the 1985 Great Amwell Productions Film “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” which often still can be seen today on cable or educational TV channels.

Michael is survived by his wife, Lynda Churchwell Kalman; son, Michael (Tracy Morgan-Kalman) Churchwell Kalman; granddaughter, Quinnlyn Patrick Kalman; and sisters-in-law, Jaletta Kalman, Sandra Kalman and Leah Howard. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, George, James and John Kalman.

A gathering of family and friends will be held 2 p.m. until a Celebration of Michael’s life at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte. Burial will be in Chicago.

Arrangements are by Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Port Charlotte Chapel.
