Esther W. Manthei, 89, of Port Charlotte, Fla., experienced a calm and tranquil death Friday, March 21, 2014, at The Palms of Punta Gorda, Fla.

She was born in Panaca, Nev., to Cecil and Lila (Nee Stevens) Price.

Her family moved to Long Beach, Calif., when she was a young girl, and she became an enthusiastic, lifelong Bruins supporter at UCLA, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Esther met her husband Hal at the end of World War II, when he was stationed in San Diego, Calif., and they were married June 2, 1946, in Long Beach. They lived in many cities around the country, as she supported Hal in his career with Texaco. She was a creative homemaker who sewed, hung wallpaper, collected and refinished antique furniture, and was a dedicated Mom to their children working in the PTO, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was active her entire life in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Esther and Hal spent their retirement years traveling the globe and entertaining family and friends, moving to Port Charlotte in 2005. Esther was a sports fan her entire life, following the UCLA Bruins, the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers. She also golfed until she was well into her 80s. Esther and Hal enjoyed 64 years of marriage, until his death in 2010. Their son, Rick, died in 2009. Esther thought that all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were smart, funny and amazing.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1303 Forrest Nelson Blvd., Port Charlotte. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Port Charlotte.
