John George Pappas Jr., 85, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 26, 2014, at his home in Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was born July 21, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pa., to John George Pappas Sr. and Alice T. Pappas.

John was a very successful restaurant entrepreneur and investor. Along with his father, he developed and later co-owned the Pike Family Restaurant in Spring House, Pa. He later also owned and operated John’s Place in Cape May, N.J. Both were iconic establishments where friends met friends for great food.

In addition to being an expert chef, he was an avid fisherman — for which he won numerous awards. He also supplied his restaurants with fresh-caught fish, to the delight of his customers, who would call the restaurants to see if “John’s Freshly Caught Fish” was on the specials menu for that night. Family and friends greatly enjoyed their time with John as Captain on one of his many fishing expeditions. He was a remarkable and unforgettable host. In Punta Gorda, he enjoyed the game of tennis at Twin Isles Country Club. He served on the board for SCORE.

John is survived by his sons, John G. (Anne) Pappas III of Brunswick, Maine, and James Pappas of Philadelphia; along with their mother and his first wife, Ruth Pappas; his sister, Anne (Frank) Pappas O’Brien of Lansdale, Pa.; granddaughters, Carol (Mike) McKay of Dover, N.H., and Cheryl Pappas of Bermuda; great-granddaughters, Ava, Molly and Katelyn McKay; his loving former second wife, Elaine Watson Pappas of Punta Gorda; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Pappas Hare, in March 2014.

At John’s request, there will be no funeral. He will be cremated and, per his wishes, his ashes spread out over the waters of Punta Gorda, where he spent many of his happiest times in life.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte, Fla.
