Ridley “Rid” or “Stu” Middleton Stuart, 80, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Peru, N.Y., passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014, in Port Charlotte, Fla., following a bout with cancer.

He was born June 6, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wis.

Ridley married the love of his life, Janice S. Peterson, June 25, 1977, in Plattsburgh Air Force Base Chapel. He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, following his retirement, he worked at Banker Orchards, for over 30 years. Ridley was an active member of First United Methodist Church, and was in their Early Birds small group, Men of Faith Bible Study, and Harmony Sunday School class. He enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, and often said while rolling his eyes, “I enjoy doing anything my wife tells me to.” Ridley will be warmly remembered for his dry wit, kind spirit and gentle demeanor.

He is survived by his wife of almost 37 years, Janice; sons, Matt and Sean; step-sons, Mark and Steven; step-daughters, Nina and Holly; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ridley was preceded in death by mother, Elizabeth; father, James; and brother, James Jr.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, in the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church, 507 West Marion Ave., Punta Gorda. His wife will receive visitors and condolences immediately following the service, in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church.
