PUNTA GORDA – Port Charlotte’s Doren Staley booted a free kick in the 68th minute, moments after Charlotte had tied the game to help the Pirates to a 2-1 victory Friday in a rivalry game.

It was the kind of game that brought out the best in both teams, even as they have hung below the .500 mark. Charlotte possessed and passed the ball well, only to have Port Charlotte’s defense make the plays they had to in the 18.
