Venice bat colony to be removed

By day, the large pavilion ceiling at Maxine Barritt Park near the Venice pier is empty, but at night it's full of bats, say officials. An "exclusion plan" to relocate the bats is in the works.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is taking the lead in removing a colony of bats from the large pavilion at Maxine Barritt Park in Venice.

Venice city officials are standing by as county maintenance crews deal with a problem they don’t come across that often.

Bat colonies have invaded the pavilions at Maxine Barritt Park next to the Venice Pier. They arrive after dusk, usually very late, and leave at daybreak.
